Slap Shot Surprise by Melanie Harlow
5.0
Melanie Harlow consistently puts the puck in the net. Maybe not in the exact same way as Joe Lupo, but I can always expect a small town romance novel that is equal parts sweet, sexy, and swoony. Accidental pregnancy is far from my favorite trope. But, we’ve waited so long for Mabel’s story. She’s been a consistent and loyal side character throughout the rest of the series. The world of Cherry Tree Harbor is already built, and it’s always fun to revisit with old friends. Mabel’s family provides a very clear motivation for her to want to stay in Cherry Tree Harbor - what a support system!! And of course Joe with his pro hockey career is his motivation for not being a relationship guy. But Joe has very strong caretaking instincts. So am I really surprised by how he showed his love via gift giving and rationalized it as taking care of the baby? Not in the least. But HE seems surprised when he figured it out - thanks Ari for sorting him out.
And Mabel as a heroine? I love that she was portrayed as a bit of a nerd, a bit (ok a lot) awkward in stressful situations, highly educated, capable and self sufficient. I connected with her in a way I can’t often with heroines.
Melanie Harlow is one of my auto-read authors. She hits the right balance with romance, comedy, and spice, sweetness and sexiness. Thanks so much for allowing me the chance to review this book ahead of release.
