There are lots of strengths in this book the lovely carving style illustrations, the interaction of various pantheons/mythologies, an interesting main plot, and the seamless inclusion of the original source material for the myths resulting in narrative that felt informative rather than overly expositional.

However, this is all overshadowed by poor pacing and storyline structure. My largest issue with the narrative is the lack of true tension or timescale. There is no definitive or set deadline on when Trixie’s quest must be complete and coupled with an underwhelming explanation of the dangers should she fail led to a lack of urgency. Urgency is a key element of adventure/quest narratives!
Additionally, if two character  motivations been hinted at earlier  there would have been chance for a more meaningful reveal. Instead the reveals felt a bit flat and shoved in as there was no rhyme or reason to have them there - no narrative clues that readers could go back to and now understand in a new light. I did appreciated the attempts to show the Trickster gods as more than ‘bad guys’ though in the case of all but two this led to very one-note ‘goofy’ characters.

It is also worth mentioning that one chapter includes quite graphic descriptions of injuries sustained by the child main character that felt completely out of place with the style of the rest of the book.
