Chatty and absorbing: a long tale of family, love and politics in India, characteristically interspersed with little poems and couplets. He’s a writer with many voices; he does the ever-suffering mother well, and the happy-go-lucky son, the remote and devoutly religious lover, the corrupted hereditary ruler, the playful doctor and lawyer. Pran and Savita’s marriage a steady light.
Graphic: Suicidal thoughts
