This story is very much “not about a boy” but about a chronically depressed girl (Mel) whose interactions with boys–the ex (Darren) who died and the pseudo BF (Hayden) that makes her want to live–help highlight how she functions through her crumbling façade. The rest of her friend/support group (Rena, Cal, Shaine, Trey, Brie, Sue & Dave Romano) were fantastically fleshed out as well. The author describes herself as a peddler of “Sad Girl Lit” and I have to admit that I’ve never noticed how much of a fan I am of this subgenre until now. I heavily annotated this book that flowed like poetry and made me feel better for reading it.
