Me, My Dad and the End of the Rainbow by Benjamin Dean

3.0

I purchased and read this knowing it was a middle grade, but a lot of adult reviewers raved about this. So I thought this potentially a good crossover fiction. However, for me, this wasn't, I think this is written for middle grade and will be more fully enjoyed by people of this age. It was a sweet story with Archie being confused and trying to understand, having to navigate being told his Dad is gay and what that means for their relationship. I think this book approached LGBT+ for young children well. It was also well written overall, Archie as a character and the friendship of the 3 kids. With the last third being very heartwarming. I just didn't enjoy their adventure, it lacked believability, and the descriptions of what being at Pride is really like were lacking and difficult for the reader to visualize. But I really disliked the 'neurotic' depiction of Archies Mum, who is also having to come to terms with her husband being gay. Also Archie and his Dad never really discuss this, it is glossed over somewhat. I thought this was a missed opportunity to add some depth and complexity to the novel to help it become a great cross-over fiction, or just to add interest for older teenagers maybe.
