Full Brutal by Kristopher Triana
3.0
rating this 3 stars but i need to preface this by saying that i don't really recommend full brutal to the average horror enjoyer. if you don't like gore or gratuitous violence, don't start start you splatterpunk-esque journey here. that being said...
i can't deny that the basic premise of this book — a teenage cheerleader going on an crazy sadistic killing/torturing spree for no reason other than she likes making people suffer — is cool af. the first few chapters are promising and kim's character is entertaining enough for a while but almost halfway through the book things get so repetitive that it just becomes one gory scene after another.
sure, some scenes are fun (maybe that's not how i'm supposed to refer to them as but it's kinda true) in an unhinged way but all of the gore and violence stopped fazing me because of how tiring and boring as hell it got after a while
to be fair, i like gore and unhinged characters, and i think that depending on how you write the gore elements that's one of the few things to actually get a reaction out of me in horror books.
however, you can get gory-horrifying-splatterpunk-esque books that have an actual good plot that holds itself together throughout the story, you know?
in full brutal, though? it turned into mindless horror. and that's totally okay. just not my thing, i discovered
idk i feel like this isn't a groundbreaking opinion in the slightest but if there'd been even a tiny wisp of plot in this i think i'd have been able to appreciate it more. as it is, full brutal delivers the fucked up shit it promises and the ending is insane (in a good way tho) but it left me wanting more. and maybe that's the intention of this book
