Such a Fun Age by Kiley Reid
4.0
“Because even though Kelley had been right about her, Alix had been right about him too.” (THERE. IT. IS.)
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! It is like The Help meets Big Little Lies meets Insecure—with a few tweaks. If Kathryn Stockett was adequately exposed and dragged for stealing her novel from her family housekeeper’s life, and if Bonnie Carlson actually made sense as a on-film character (they should’ve given her the backstory from the book), and if Issa Rae continues to allow cringeworthy Ladies’ Night dialogue in Season 4, the combination of these things would be Kiley Reid’s debut.
Such a Fun Age will definitely be a conversation-starter and book club shoo-in for 2020. I do not think there are many new topics raised here (unlike what I’ve heard in some reviews), but Kiley Reid has succeeded in creating a frustrating, fascinating story about two women that I wish had equal real estate in this story (more on that later.)
I will discuss my various gripes in characterization, why I hate Kelley Copeland with a passion, and the key takeaways from my discussion with my college roommate about this one, after the holiday!
