The Castaways by Lucy Clarke

4.0

I really enjoyed this even though the timing couldn't have been worse as I'll be getting on a plane next week, but putting that aside I enjoyed this more than I thought I would given that it's a bit of a generic, holiday read, type thriller. The story did kind of tail off a little bit in the middle and although I cared why some of the characters were acting oddly, we never really seemed to get all the answers. It was also very apparent that some of the survivors were literally idiots. You think the pilot tried to kill you but you put him in charge of signalling for help, really? I also didn't really understand one of the female character's desperate need for a baby, to the point where it took over everything. I'm not saying that doesn't happen but I can't relate is all.

I thought the writing was excellent but the story wasn't really strong enough to sustain this long of a book so the middle section was essentially holding material. Having said all of that though, it was evocative, it was atmospheric, especially the stuff on the island, and I thought that while the character's were a bit one dimensional, I at least recognised them. Also I think some of the vagueness was a plot device to keep the reader off balance.

I enjoyed it and it's a good holiday read, although maybe don't read it when you're on a plane.
