Scythe by Neal Shusterman
5.0
I really need to read more Neal Shusterman. This novel was fantastic. I love how he creates these alternate futures that are similar enough to our own, but answer a thought-provoking question. In this instance, what would it be like if people could live forever? How would that affect humanity and the world itself?
The characters were believable, the idea of the Scythedom was well thought out and interesting. I thought it was interesting that the Scythes themselves behaved almost like the vampires in the Sookie Stackhouse series - as if they were above humanity, even though many of them clearly retained more humanity and empathy than many.
The story itself was a little slow to start, but there was so much world building to do, and I think all of the slowness was completely necessary. I believe this is going to be a trilogy, so I'm looking forward to seeing where the story goes from here.

Just finished my re-read in preparation for The Toll, and I bumped my rating from a 4 to a 5. I think knowing the things that happen in Thunderhead made this story even more enjoyable this time around. I noticed a lot of the subtle things the author added to the story that just deepens the world building that I missed the first time.
