The Never List by Koethi Zan

4.0

I really enjoyed this book, the stand out for me was how sensitive and empowering the writer was to the survivors. Writers of this genre can sometimes go too far with the pain, lack of agency and 'victim hood' they put their characters through just because it is fiction, they turn them in 2d character, with the focus often being on 'killers'. Koethi avoided that pit fall and I think this added a real edge. I loved that this was from the survivors POV, it incorporated the trauma, recovery and regrets into the story brilliantly. Now even with all that, it was so far fetched, it was like a criminal minds episode. I also think that in trying to be clever and adding 1/2 extra twists it dramatized is too much and took away some of the urgency and realness. But it is still engaging, interesting and different enough to bring something new to the reader.
