Mary Jane by Jessica Anya Blau
4.0
A fun, coming-of-age novel set in the 1970s!
Mary Jane and Izzy’s narrative voices were so strong and so believable!
If you’re looking for a fast-paced book, this is probably not for you. It’s far more character driven and shows how the Cone household introduces Mary Jane to a whole new world, ultimately showing her that she can be whoever she wants to be.
I listened to the audiobook of this and I think that was a great decision! The narrator was great and I loved that there was a song at the end of the audiobook—so good!
My only issue with this book is that the Cone family are depicted as the “ideal”, “perfect” family. While I did like the Cone parents, they often forgot to feed Izzy or bathe her and relied almost too heavily on Mary Jane’s care. I do wish that Mary Jane at least recognised that the Cone family were flawed, though in vastly different ways than her own parents.
