Burning the Midnight Oil by Ashley James

4.0

I felt so sad for Boone at the start. Just going through the motions in life. It was so awesome to see the way he slowly came alive as he spent time with Grady. And it slowly built over time. Until the tension - good gravy. Grady was young, but didn’t seem young. I’m glad he became friends with Xander. As the story went on, it was interesting to me that Grady was the one who still seemed hesitant and Boone was the one who still wanted to explore what they had.
I know in the end it’s a truly messed up family dynamic, but it was so obvious that for all involved, Suzy was their light and first priority.
Jade’s reaction I felt was pretty spot on and realistic. Not overblown, but also not chill. I think the author got it just right.

I also really enjoyed continued shenanigans with the whole crew. Seeing Shooter as - well, Shooter- being a shit was actually some comedy to break up all the heaviness. And he totally deserved to be punched.

Now, I can’t wait to read Colt’s story next! This series is just so good. Small town but with rodeo cowboys. Perfect.
