The Flight of Gemma Hardy by Margot Livesey
3.0
2.5 rounded up; there's nothing wrong with it per se, but it's blah enough to not fully be a 3
Reviewing before I finish because my opinion is very unlikely to change. I wouldn't say this has been a waste of time, but I kind of wish I hadn't started it. It's a variant on Jane Eyre, including the much too long early life part. But Jane Eyre is a product of its time, whereas this one distinctly is not. I suppose I should give credit to Livesey for being able to write very much like Bronte, but I don't feel that the Victorian style of writing is appropriate for a story set in the 1950s(?). I'm also not sure that Sinclair's secret is quite as grievous as Rochester's, and probably not worth Gemma's fussing.
