Hey remember a couple years ago when zombie historical fiction was all the rage? Yeah. Yeah.
Here’s what makes this zing: The protagonist is Black and the setting is 1880s America, where institutional racism is alive and well. Jane goes to boarding school to learn how to efficiently kill zombies, because she’s Black and that’s what Black people are good for.
It’s about race, identity, and what can be done about it. It’s very good.
