Though The Long Walk is not your typical type of horror, a horror it was. I actually really enjoyed that it was written under the Richard Bachman name as it was so different from his works before, i.e. Carrie, The Shining, Salem's Lot, etc.
I always think when any author writes about preteens/teenages the unfolding of their belief in their invincibility to realizing their own mortality and how devastating that is for them is so interesting. Especially when it is specific to being only boys.Their bravado and assurance in themselves that they'll be the last one to end The Long Walk slowly dwindles as boy after boy is "getting their ticket." It was devastating to watch their minds unravel and the gruesome deaths they had to witness and the mental games it played on them. Listening to the audiobook only exacerbated that. I recommend this one HIGHLY! I look forward to my long Stephen King journey. 4.75/5.
