2024 reread: it's perfect I missed this world
This is my first book by Abercrombie and my first introduction into this world. I absolutely adored all of the characters. I thought the interpersonal relationships and the politics were extremely well done. I was a little disappointed by the lack of overall plot movement. I think I had a difference in expectations for what I thought this series would be and I went into it fairly blind so they were really just expectations of my own creation. I think I was expecting there to be a bit more action and adventure and I didn't get that. However, that's not to say this book is not fantastic. I am looking forward to the series finding its footing now that we have a good lay of the land and understand all the characters in the political factions. So only time will tell!
