Red Country by Joe Abercrombie

5.0

A bunch of different things flow through my mind at the moment, but I’m not sure what to make out of the bigger picture right now. For starters, I did not find it tedious at all. Had it been longer I could have had issues with it, but it actually flows quite well and it’s very much packed with excellent moments. It’s hard to pin down what exactly is it trying to do, though (other than to honour Blood Meridian?*). Maybe it’s something about the evil in our world and how we’re best avoiding it. Something ambiguous about nihilism. Whatever…

But it’s brilliant storytelling! As far as I’m concerned, this was one of the best readings I remember having in the genre, mainly because of how well the characterization and the setting hit.

Every time I finish one of Abercrombie’s books I’m left wondering where the ride has really taken me on a personal level, but I am never displeased by the ride itself. Red Country proofs this more than any other book of his I have read, and it just so happens to be perfectly enjoyable as well.

I guess that means this is a good book...
