The Local by Joey Hartstone
5.0
Loved this gritty, engrossing legal thriller debut! The first chapter’s writing pulled me in and didn’t let me go. I read this in one evening without stopping.
Jimmy is a patent lawyer in Marshall, TX. Fresh off a win, he is sucked into a new case when Amir is being sued for patent infringement. And then things get really dark when Amir is accused of murder.
Despite the author being really good at describing patent law, I thought the whole novel would be about patents *yawn*. Imagine my surprise when it became a murder whodunit and the “local” patent lawyer steps in as a criminal defense attorney.
Are there some tropes? Yes. Is our main character hard living to avoid dealing with some things? Yes. But there’s a really good story here that’s worth your time.
