Gormenghast by Mervyn Peake

Like a thread of life that should crash against reality in some way but doesn’t, Gormenghast is the fully realized vision of an author, like Faust for Goethe or Ulysses for James Joyce. There is no greater praise for the writer than that.
I don’t care for descriptions of it being the best fantasy work of all time, but it does not leave you indifferent as a reading experience. It's an absolute standard of artistic integrity, exhausting and seemingly endless, but to the adequate reader this could mean the world.
