This is advertised as a dark romance but is so much more. Francine and Troy ‘Ernest’ are both suffering from PTSD–her from this brush with violence, him from his past wrongful conviction. She oddly soothes her fears by clinging to him, and he has attempted to make peace with the years he lost with his “silent activist” agenda but finds a true calm with her. Partway through the book, the plot focus switches as his community work draws him into solving a mystery that has implications for them and their future. The Stockholm Syndrome was well done and the plot twists were well-executed.
