The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Annie Barrows, Mary Ann Shaffer
5.0
"The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society," by Mary Ann Shaffer, is a charming story about a diverse group of people brought together by their mutual friend, Elizabeth, during the Nazi occupation of their English Channel Island (Guernsey) off the coast of Normandy. The story is told through a series of letters between members of the society, Juliet Ashton, an author that they met quite by accident, and Juliet's publisher Sidney. Romance, love of literature, and historical fiction are blended together with characters that I fell in love with. The narrated version is done very well. I had seen the movie when it came out but it was not fresh in my memory. Watching the movie again after having read the book, I much prefer the book. That being said the movie was well done and enjoyable. Mary Ann Shaffer is (was) a wonderful author who unfortunately died before the book was published. Her niece finished the work. It is unclear how much of the work is that of her niece, Annie Barrows. It is regrettable that we will miss out from more work from Mary Ann Shaffer but I'm anxious to watch for more from Annie Barrows.
