Down with the System: A Memoir (Of Sorts) by Serj Tankian

hopeful informative inspiring reflective fast-paced

5.0

This may be my favourite audiobook of the year. Serj reads his story with a warmth that makes you feel like you are having one of those deep conversations with a close friend. I read a lot of memoirs and biographies of musicians but this could be my favourite yet.

It’s part memoir, part history and part political book with an exploration of generational trauma and the affects this has on someone’s life.

This was a timely read for me as I’ve been wanting to learn more about the Armenian genocide as this was an area of history that I was not fully aware of. Serj gives us the history of the genocide and his family’s place in it as well as what it was like for him growing up in Lebanon during a civil war and the affects these experiences had on him and his family.

As a System of a Down fan I also enjoyed the history of the band and how Serj’s music and activism ran alongside each other. Serj has lived a fascinating life and I’ve loved learning more about it.
