The Dream Thieves by Maggie Stiefvater

5.0

......“While I'm gone," Gansey said, pausing, "dream me the world. Something new for every night.”

Going into this book I didn't expect to love it as much as I did The Raven Boys, not because I didn't think it would be good but because I truly didn't know how the magic in this book could increase by 10,000,000 times more than the first book. Usually for the second book in a series I never go in expecting much. I know the characters already , I know the world and the plot, this is just continuing on what I already learned in the first book but this book was nothing like that. It was more, It was that something more (yes , that was a pun)

......"In that moment, Blue was a little in love with all of them.
Their magic. Their quest. Their awfulness and strangeness.
Her raven boys."

The entire friendship dynamic in this series so far has blown me away , I thought the first book was enough but the entire second book came for me. This group, they would do anything for each other and no matter what inner demons they are battling they are there for one another. They are not perfect.. they argue, they have conflict between them and its the most realistic friendship I've ever read. Just hearing Blue speak about them makes my heart swell because at one point she didn't want anything to do with boys like them but now.. they are HER raven boys. Another part that showed how much she loved them was talking about her secret longing for wanting to live in the Monmouth Manufacturing. Despite loving her family at 300 fox way , the thought of being able to live under the same roof as the boys felt more like home.

...... "Ronan Lynch lived with every sort of secret.
His first secret was himself. He was brother to a liar and brother to an angel, son of a dream and son of a dreamer. He was a warring star full of endless possibilities, but in the end, as he dreamt in the backseat on the way to the Barns that night, he created only this...”

Ronan, Ronan, Ronan. I cannot begin to explain how much I adore him. We got a lot more insight on him in this book, of course since the plot was centered around him and being able to take things from his dreams. We got so much more than that though, we got to see inside of him... sides of him that we didn't know existed. We learned that he was a boy who loved his father, a boy who was afraid of himself.. that the night terrors he dreamed were of himself. He was a boy who loved his brother , his friends... and even just himself. He had just neglected that feeling for so long.

...... "It's only you," whispered Orphan Girl. She was holding his hand crouched down next to him. "Why do you hate you?" Ronan thought about it. The albino night horror swept in, talons opening. Ronan stood up, stretching out his arm like he would to Chainsaw."I don't," he said. And he woke up.”

That entire part made me cry , because we all know how Gansey consistently speaks about how Ronan is now, that hes always angry or upset. They all worry he will do something to himself, harm himself and for a long time you realize how internally sad he is but finally he was able to understand, that the monsters he dreamed of that hated him weren't monsters at all but himself and he realized he didn't hate himself after all.

...... "If Adam was stupid about his pride, Gansey was stupid about Adam.”

Going back to the friendship dynamic of this entire story , we see a lot of conflict between Gansey and Adam (and its not about budding romance) its about the differences between the two. Since book one when Adam left and did what he did without Gansey you can see the two tiptoeing around one another. Especially Gansey.. he doesn't want to think about what Adam did , about how betrayed he felt so he buries it down until it explodes. I think the friendship between these two is the most complex and its entirely because of Adams pride and Gansey lack of not understanding it. Gansey just wants to help Adam but its come to the point where he doesn't know how to without Adam thinking the other is pitying him. I really love these two, because despite their continuously rumbling emotions they would both , do anything for each other.

...... “Sometimes Ronan thought Adam was so used to the right way being painful that he doubted any path that didn’t come with agony.”

Though the hints were subtle and the whole mess with Kavinsky could stray us away from what the big picture is, we see Ronan's crush on Adam. He speaks about dreaming of Adam multiple times and even speaks about picturing Gansey by his side and even though he truly did "swing that way" Gansey was his brother. Adam was not included in that , and we have the small moments that Ronan has to himself that his thoughts wonder over to Adam, wondering where he was and what he was doing. The dream of Adam tracing his tattoo and saying I know how that is in Latin, while Kavinsky said I know what you are. This book set up that entire relationship for something more and I'm not prepared for it!

...... “What do you want, Adam?
To feel awake when my eyes are open.”

Oh my god, I don't even know where to begin with my son , Adam Parrish. This poor guy... he truly has gone through it. His relationship with all of them is in shambles , of course not permanently but he feels so indifferent about it all. Having to move away from home.. pay rent.. this anger that's boiling up inside him. The fear to become like his father .. Adam has gone through a lot but I was happy to see him find himself a bit with Persephone's help and balance himself out. All I can hope for now is that he loosens up just a bit , that he realizes his friends want to help and it isn't out of pity. Its because they love him and he deserves someone to love him after not being loved for such a long time.

I JUST WANT TO SAY I LOVE NOAH CZERNY SO MUCH AND HE IS SO PRECIOUS, BLESS HIM FOR ALWAYS BEING THERE FOR ALL OF THEM. ESPECIALLY BLUE.

...... "I wish you could be kissed, Jane,' he said. 'Because I would beg just one off you. Under all this.' He flailed an arm toward the stars.”

THIS , THIS WHOLESOME ASS COUPLE IS EVERYTHING. One thing that's done well in these books is the romance. Its subtle , it isn't the big idea. We focus a lot on the characters and just their friendships, though when we go into relationships that are much more than that, It is done beautifully. Blue and Gansey in this book , they blew every book couple for me out of the water. They don't kiss , they aren't even dating but you can see it. They are each others something more. The way they bicker or they speak to one another about things. How easily annoyed he becomes with himself for just thinking of compliments he wishes he could tell her. When he can't sleep , his first solution is to talk too Blue. When she is dealing with inner turmoil, her first solution is to go too Gansey. Their entire relationship is so heartfelt and pure , I truly don't understand.

This entire book was even better than The Raven Boys , AND THE RAVEN BOYS WAS REALLY REALLY GOOD. Honestly if it was an option this book would have gotten 10 stars. This series has crept up to becoming an absolute favorite alongside Percy Jackson for me. I'm so excited to get deeper into Blue Lily, Lily blue.

IF YOU HAVEN'T READ THIS SERIES OR YOU ARE JUST HESITATING ON READING IT , JUST FREAKING READ IT. YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED. ITS BEAUTIFUL!

also I didn't want to continuously say it so I held back but I adore Richard Campbell Gansey the third, I will die for him.
