Salvage the Bones by Jesmyn Ward

5.0

RECOMMENDED

This story is very hard and very good. It's about poverty and family and what do you even do in the face of an apocalyptic hurricane bearing down on your town? Fair warning that dog-fighting figures prominently in the plot, but it's not gratuitous, and it serves the story. I thought the use of the Medea myth was so effective. Jesmyn Ward is now 3 of 3 when it comes to 5-star ratings for me. I don't know how she does it. Her writing is well-crafted and powerful. Similar to when I read [b:Sing, Unburied, Sing|32920226|Sing, Unburied, Sing|Jesmyn Ward|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1499340866s/32920226.jpg|53537916], I had to take breaks between sections to catch my breath. I'm so glad this book won the National Book Award the year it was released.
