Brown Girls by Daphne Palasi Andreades

5.0

Ending the month with this review of Brown Girls. #bookreview #filamauthor

It’s a great debut that the author depicts collectively the lives of brown girls and their immigrant families living in the dregs of Queens, New York, from childhood to adulthood. It’s beautifully written in a unique way, powerful and profound, told in poetic vignettes that examines home, family, feeling of belongingness, immigration and what it means to be a brown girl.

I like how the author depicts uses the “we” as a narrative voice showing the universal experiences of women of color, regardless of how dark your skin, race, religion, ethinicity. People compound them and look at them collectively as one and assume they are all one and the same. It gives the reader the feel of their struggles in every situation and how they deal with it in all stages of their lives. Though it’s impossible to speak about the experiences of all women of color as one but the author is able to to this perfectly.

I am supposed to read this one last May in time for #AAPIHeritageMonth, but doesn’t matter which month I read this. I will always support Filipino authors with their work, every month all year!
