We studied Beowulf briefly in uni, but it was years ago and I could barely remember what happened. Plus, this book is a new retelling, so it isn't as accurate as the original one. However, it was a delightful read, I sat in one place and finished it within an hour.
It reminded me of Tolkien's The Hobbit. The medieval setting, the monsters and supernatural beings, the great adventures and strong, witty heroes. I couldn't put it down. I loved Beowulf, the kind and wholesome hero. I loved meeting the scary enemies, when good defeats evil. This retelling was colourful and fun and it should be on the shelves of every kid (or grown up). It's as good as mead.
