The more I read the Bridgerton novels, the more I dislike the Bridgerton men and how they’re portrayed. I am pretty biased towards the show, as there always seems to be some sort of problematic theme in the novels. This book however wasn’t as bad as the first and even though Benedict did some questionable things, I did like the story overall. I liked the Cinderella themes of the story and how Benedict was able to fall in love with Sophie not just through their initial interaction, but by getting to know her. Sophie was also a great main character and her working as a servant added another layer to the Bridgerton universe. Not only does it show how gossip can spread so quickly, but also sheds light on how poorly some workers were treated in the 1800’s. Before (in this series) we hear about the servants in the households, but this gives us a glimpse into their day to day activities. I listened to this book on audio and I think that is how I will continue to Bridgerton series because I definitely noticed that the audio version kept my attention a lot more compared to the physical books.
