Chase Darkness with Me: How One True-Crime Writer Started Solving Murders by Billy Jensen
4.0
“If you get killed in America there is a 38% chance your killer won’t be caught.”
Think about that for a second. That’s nearly 40% of murderers that will never do time. And if you or your loved one is killed by a stranger the odds of that person being apprehended and prosecuted are even worse. Much worse.
Billy Jensen is out to change all that.
Jensen has an obsession - identifying and catching killers. His success rate hovers around 16%. Not spectacular but not bad, especially when you consider that he takes on the hardest cases. The cases where law enforcement officials are stymied, stumped, or simply don’t have the resources to proceed any further. And he does it at his own expense; he receives no reward money and very often no acknowledgment or recognition. This man is as close to a true altruist as you’ll ever find. Period.
How does he do it? Two words: Crowd Sourcing.
If you’ve read Michelle McNamara (I’ll Be Gone in the Dark) then you already have a feel for the kind of cases Billy Jensen works on. In fact, he and Michelle were good friends. After Michelle’s untimely passing, Jensen helped ensure her book got finished and, in the process, helped to put another serial killer behind bars.
In his epilogue Jensen invites us all to become victims’ advocates and citizen sleuths. The how-to portion alone is worth the price of the book. This was a captivating and disquieting read. Highly recommended for anyone even remotely interested in true crime. Four stars.
