Kill Creek by Scott Thomas
5.0
I liked this book. A lot. I had heard that people thought it was one of the better books written recently about a haunted house. And that it was - a really solid, spooky book about a scary house in Kansas. But it was also a great story about trauma, loss, and the darker side of people. About fame and glory and writing and horror as a genre. So there was a lot more to it than just a spooky story about a haunted house.
Thomas did a great job weaving a story that made you curious about the house itself and whatever was going on there, as well as keeping you invested in the main characters of the book. It was surprisingly dark at times, while still having some moments of levity. I think that makes a great horror story. That rollercoaster feeling you get throughout. The last quarter of the book felt like a full blown slasher/action movie, which is a treat when the majority of the book feels like a slow burn.
I am STILL thinking about the ending. It was a twist I did not see coming and it left my heart pounding. I have to give major props to the author for that. I would recommend this book to anyone who isn't afraid of a little gore, likes quirky (and somewhat dark) characters, and wants to be creeped out just enough. Not the scariest thing I've read, but was a perfect read for Halloween weekend.
