A House with Good Bones by T. Kingfisher
mysterious
tense
medium-paced

This had such a similar vibe to What Feasts At Night, but was set in this world, not a fantasy one. Travelling home after a job is delayed, Sam finds that her usually modern mother has put the Confederate painting her Grandma loved back up, and the walls have been painted a stark white. The vibe of the house gets progressively worse, until she's forced to confront the idea of the supernatural.
The set up of this story was so good, and the moment Sam realised there was no bugs in the garden was incredibly creepy, but I did start to feel bored when the story became repetative in the middle. However, the final act was so wild, so chaotic, and so funny it made the wait worth it for the pay off.
I genuinely became convinced that Sam's mother was being messed with by her gardener so she'd sell the property to him, so I was so glad to be wrong - that would have been so boring. I know now to trust that the author always has some creepy, weird horror up her sleeve, that will stay in my head for many more weeks.
