The Sunlit Man by Brandon Sanderson

4.0

I started this book and was immediately confused. Who is this man? Why is he like this, when he wasn't before? What happened? Why does it feel like I'm missing a ton of puzzle pieces?

You know, normal Cosmere feelings.

Anyway, this is my favorite of the Secret Projects. Despite not understanding the first hint of what was going on until several chapters in, I wholly enjoyed this book's ride. In fact, I read it all in about four hours while taking a "break" from what I was actually supposed to be studying.

Highlights for me were the planet and its very odd ecosystem. I LOVE discovering and unraveling the mysteries behind the worldbuilding with Cosmere main characters and it honestly never gets old. We also get to dip our toes into Threnody in some ways, and the Scadrial and Night Brigade background shenanigans are fascinating.

At its core, this is the story of a fallen and failed hero struggling with the temptation to believe again. He can't fully break out of his jaded emotional scar tissue, but he remembers who he was when he used to believe in something greater. In the end, he can't go back to the man he used to be, but he can become someone new. (Also: "Adonalsium is dead... but I'll see what I can do." I SCREAMED.)

Despite struggling to take the name Zellion seriously since the chaotic #zellionsweep when the minifigure was revealed, I can't deny that the climax of this book was just awesome in every way.
