Read as part of the Audrey listen along hosted on the StoryGraph app. My Brontë knowledge was woefully lacking as I had only read Jane Eyre and tried and failed to get through Wuthering Heights so I really wanted to get some more Brontës under my belt.
I really enjoyed this and loved Anne’s writing style; this must have been incredibly progressive and brave for the time although perhaps still a long way off a modern idea of feminism.
I would love to hear the story from Helen’s point of view as well as Gilbert’s; how different would Helen’s diary have been without Gilbert’s potential editing of it? And do we know that Helen was truly happy with her lot at the end? Enquiring minds want to know.
But regardless I enjoyed the story so much that I was sad when it ended.
