I am once again plugging through various SF/F rec lists and I loved this one. It is exactly what it says on the tin: Fantasy Mafia in fantasy Hong Kong, not quite dark but definitely with some grit, and very well paced. A couple times the horrors-unspecified-but-implied are too unspecified to really land right, and I’d like it if the queer character was actively queer and not just stated, BUT those don’t really detract from the book as a whole.
