The Rape of Nanking by Iris Chang
5.0
Undoubtedly one of the most harrowing books I've ever read, The Rape of Nanking opened my eyes to an event in history that I (as well as many other people) didn't know anything about. It is not easy to get through despite its short page count - it feels as though the atrocities won't stop mounting, the violence gets denser and more vile, and the pages themselves feel soaked in blood. It's a painful read but a vital one. I can't imagine the toll the research of this book took on Chang herself and we can't thank her enough for fighting so hard to get this story told.
