The Dream Daughter by Diane Chamberlain

5.0

I have always loved Diane Chamberlain's books. She creates exquisite connection with her characters, and I find the stories moving. In the past 8 years or so, I've found that her books have branched out from her earlier works, often tackling more difficult issues and subjects.

The Dream Daughter is no exception because Chamberlain's newest is about time travel. I find time travel mind bend-y, as even Back to the Future left me reeling. So I pretty much avoid the whole sci fi genre, but Chamberlain's novel made me think of time travel within the novel's arc so compelling. I still feel it's mind bend-y, yet it was a great read that makes the reader think about what I would do in the same situation.

The main character Carly is a young physical therapist, and her husband Joe went to fight in Vietnam in 1969. She gets pregnant right before he leaves, and he's killed right after arriving in Vietnam. About halfway through her pregnancy, she's told that her unborn baby has severe heart issues and will not survive. Her brother-in-law soon after confesses that he has time traveled to the 1960s from the 21st century and can send her to 2001 to have the fetal surgery done to save her baby. With just her baby as a reminder of her husband, Carly decides to do it. Unexpected things happen, and Carly faces difficult choices along the way.
