The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah

5.0

Kristin Hannah sure knows how to pull on my heartstrings, and The Nightingale was no exception!

As WWII begins, two estranged sisters and reunited in German-occupied France but respond differently to the war. One wants to take a stand, fight back, and the other just wants to survive each day and protect her daughter. The relationship between these two and the changes that take place during the war are reason enough alone to purchase the book.

However, beyond that, Hannah highlights are part of the war that not many WWII historical fiction novels focus on - the women who were expected to just continue on and wait. The story is beautiful, the growth of each character in incredible to witness, and the tie ins to WWII are insightful. There's a reason why Historical Fiction continues to be my favorite genre!
