A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness
5.0
I LOVED this book. I have no idea if there are inaccuracies, but the story itself was so absorbing that even if every detail was a mistake, it was worth the read. My only caution is that the story does not end with this book, so I'd you don't want to have to wait in publishing timelines, I recommend waiting until closer to when book two comes out.
Interestingly, I finished the book in 2.5 days, which has been a challenge for me with as little reading time as I've had recently. I'm also on my second pad of _The Name of the Wind_, and as much as I love that book, I haven't been able to read it nearly as quickly. I am definitely a fan of paranormal romance, which _Discovery_ qualifies as, but this one seems more grown up and less pulpy than some of my other favorites that I breeze through.
I'm sure some will find the relationships between the protagonists a little too perfect, but for some reason, that didn't bother me. And as usual for me, I love the idea of "others" living among us, though I stumbled a few times over their casual use of "creatures" to describe themselves as differentiated from humans. Some other reviews brought up _Twilight_, but I think Anne Rice or Charlaine Harris are better comparisons. A.S. Byatt with a paranormal twist...
