This is a slow burn, enemies to frenemies to lovers, and it is so much fun to read! Willa comes off as very rude and hostile in the beginning. She admits she has a temper, but especially in the first few chapters, her temper really isn’t justified. Ryder also comes off as very rude, until you realize he is deaf and wasn’t intentionally being rude. One of the reasons I loved this series is that it has very diverse characters. Each book has a different disability or has their characters in difficult situations. Although Ryder has been deaf/mute for a few years, he still has difficulty accepting and opening up to others about his disability. Willa is under a lot of stress with school, soccer, and her mom being in the hospital with cancer (tw: the mom dies from cancer). Willa and Ryder have a lot of ups/downs and are constantly going back and forth on whether to pursue something more than frenemies. I’m not always the biggest fan of slow burns, but this one is fun with all the banter between the two and it actually makes sense with the plot of the book. It’s funny, sad, and heartwarming in all the best ways and I really enjoyed reading this.
