Ghosts in the Snow by Tamara Siler Jones

adventurous dark emotional mysterious sad tense medium-paced

4.25

An absolute gem of a book. I never read a full blown crime mystery novel and I think I understand the taste for them now. I’ve been looking for Fantasy stories that don’t focus on big worlds, lots of characters, and sequel spanning plot lines. This series nails that.
This horror themes Forensic Fantasy thriller was a breath of fresh air for me in particular. Tamara assembles a well fleshed out cast of characters, including the elderly, intelligent, and  damaged protagonist Dubric. Whose name and face I won’t forget now as I grew attached to him quickly. But neither his partners Dien, Lars, Otlee and other characters that live in the castle.
The book maintains a good pacing between the (very grisly) murders and the time analyzing the clues andevidence. It’s full of red herrings and the like and I enjoyed trying to piece together the clues myself. When I had my “Ah ha!” Moment. Tamara promptly lead me to where I may be wrong again, only to then confirm my suspicions with a bang. And I loved the hell out it. As a horror book fan I waa just expecting some simple crime mystery, but was genuinely shocked at the darkness and horror that lurked in these pages. Tamara doesn’t pull punches.

I can’t wait to see what Dubric and his pages get into in the next book.
