I borrowed this book on a whim as a 7 day “skip the line” loan from Libby. I am not a historical fiction girl but something about this one intrigued me and once I got started I quite literally could not stop reading until I finished it. My hands free kindle holder coming in the day before I started it and my page turner really came in clutch.
The depictions of WWI are both brutal and exhilarating. I felt like I was in the trenches with these men and I felt myself despair alongside Ellwood and Guant and all of the men, friends and foe alike, who fought beside them.
The writing was beautiful but not overly done, I absolutely loved the poetry throughout, and I just still can’t quite find the words to describe but how absolutely breathtaking this debut novel is.
