The Big Fat Anti-Oppression Reading Challenge 2025
by Books in the Time of Chaos (IG: @books_in_the_time_of_chaos)
2024 has been the year that we acknowledged that we’re in hell and our handbasket is on fire. People across the world are under threat, and all the protest in the world seems to us to have resulted only small responses. We’ve (not we, but our people, which is We!) voted extremists and centrists back into power and watched as genocide and war were waged - sometimes in our names, as though our marginalisation was a good reason to sin on a grand, documented, gleeful scale. Global climate change making it more and more difficult to survive, while capitalism crushes lives without respite. We live in a hydra-headed dystopia.
At BiToC, books and reading - and community - have sustained us through these times. Reading and community will support us in the coming year as well.
For the second year, we present the Big Fat Anti-Oppression Challenge (cool name pending). The aim of this challenge is to read deliberately, consciously, and to search for authors and writers who we might have otherwise not heard of. Publishing is dominated by dominant voices, and while that is changing, the volume of books published each year means we are going to miss out, and we drown in our TBRs. Put crudely, we look for authors who represent communities, spaces, voices, positions that are under-represented, marginalised, oppressed, invisiblised, dying, in some way. We’re not going to gate keep how anyone defines these terms - it’s not our place. (But if you have a question, ask us, and we'll do our best to answer!) So here it is - our prompts and suggestions for 2025!
We hope this is an immersive and engaged reading year for you, and that you come out of 2025 able to look forward to 2026.
