I love biological anthropology so when this book was recommended on my Tiktok, I knew I had to read it! Sue Black is clearly passionate about her work and this book is a love letter to her profession.

Parts of this were definitely more memoir than textbook, which is a good and ok thing for me. I liked it for how personable it made the story, but it also sometimes affected the pacing and made me wonder how certain cases could possibly be related to the body parts being discussed. It is also a very difficult read in terms of content, I had not read the trigger warnings beforehand and wish I had as there are very sensitive topics in this book.

I would recommend this book to fans of true crime and anatomy, although I am definitely more of the latter rather than the former (which did affect how I felt about some of the content). This is also a great read for anyone interested in science and research in general.

I actually cried at the end (and many times throughout although this was due to cases being sad or otherwise distressing)! What an amazing book. Literal love Lucinda, was so happy she got her own section I. The acknowledgment ha! Also I’ll never recover from the phrase “foot soup”.
