I love biological anthropology so when this book was recommended on my Tiktok, I knew I had to read it! Sue Black is clearly passionate about her work and this book is a love letter to her profession.

Parts of this were definitely more memoir than textbook, which is a good and ok thing for me. I liked it for how personable it made the story, but it also sometimes affected the pacing and made me wonder how certain cases could possibly be related to the body parts being discussed. It is also a very difficult read in terms of content, I had not read the trigger warnings beforehand and wish I had as there are very sensitive topics in this book.

I would recommend this book to fans of true crime and anatomy, although I am definitely more of the latter rather than the former (which did affect how I felt about some of the content). This is also a great read for anyone interested in science and research in general.

The tone and paxing of this book is excellent. I looked forward to hearing what Sue Black would be up to next. There does need to be a strong trigger warning for chapter 8, so please look into that.

This was an excellent non-fiction book written by a forensic Anthropologist working in Scotland. I will say that a regular audience picking this book up might find it a bit boring and morbid. But if you are someone that finds medical content fascinating and enjoys anatomy, this is definitely the book for you. I have a background in Anthropology (including some forensic Anthropology), so I was able to connect with a lot of what the author discussed. If you have that background, I highly recommend this book. It was absolutely amazing to hear the very important work that forensic Anthropologists are able to do. With only fragments of bone, they can often determine how someone died and give a body back its identity. They are even able to do this in cold case from decades past. Truly remarkable.

An informative and interesting perspective from forensic anthropologist Sue Black on what skeletal remains can tell us about the life and death of the individual they belong to. Along with scientific explanations of how certain bones can be used to convey details of these stories, the author includes case examples from her career showcasing how knowledge obtained from those bones helped criminal investigations. Excellent book, highly recommend.
