Was it fairly predictable? Yes (mostly because, if you've read the Blood and Ash series, you'll know a bit about Sera and Nyktos's fate). Did I still fall head over heels for the characters and become enraptured in the story? ABSOLUTELY

This novel also wins my personal 2024 award for spiciest scene

“You’re brave, strong, and resilient. You don’t need anyone to fight your battles. You never have. You don’t now.” “But I will fight for you.”

“I still fell, Sera. Hard and fast. Irrevocably. Even without my kardia, I fell in love with you.”

Jennifer Armentrout knocks it out of the park with the latest addition to the Flesh and Fire series!

A Fire in the Flesh picks up right where A Light in the Flame left off and completely hits the ground running. Sera and Nyktos have been captured by Kolis, who is convinced that Sera is Sotoria, his one weakness, reincarnated. To free Nyktos, Sera must convince Kolis that she is Sotoria, but even a lifetime of training can prepare her for what she is up against. Kolis is only one part of the battle. The Ascension is upon her, and Sera is out of time.

A Fire in the Flesh was everything I hoped it would be. I was hooked from the first page and devoured this book in just two days. I couldn’t put it down. Sera and Nyktos left me utterly captivated. Their love and devotion to one another kept me glued to the pages. There is nothing Sera wouldn’t do to free the man she loved. Sera was so tough and fierce. She wasn’t afraid to speak her mind, even if it got her into trouble. She really kept me on my toes this time around. And Nyktos, what’s not to love about him? I mean, he is the ultimate book boyfriend. He would risk everything for Sera to give her the life she deserves. The connection Sera and Nyktos share is off the charts, amazing and I just can’t get enough of their story.

A Flesh in the Fire leaves no stone unturned while answering a lot of my burning questions. Jennifer Armentrout left quite of few breadcrumbs for readers and the revelations blew my mind. I wouldn’t say this book ends on a cliffhanger, but more of a to-be-continued. I loved the way this story ended, and I can not wait to see how everything will come together when the final book, Born of Blood and Ash, releases next year.

*I was provided an ARC copy of this book, in exchange for an honest review*

A bit disappointed with this one. I love this series but, up until 60% of this book, nothing happened. It just felt like I was reading the same chapter over and over again.
Still love daddy Niktos tho ♡

Would be a 5 but the first half of the book could have been condensed into like the first 10 chapters

I loved that this book started to connect to the OG series but it was way too long. I suffered through after loving the first two books.

I still devoutly love the characters, and the world built by Armentrout, and I will read the series until the end and still want more.

I did find the third installment of this series to be not as compelling and mesmerizing as the first two; I feel it had the building blocks and the potential to be there, but I couldn't shake the feeling that something was just lacking.

Sera's internal monologues seemed to be repetitive throughout the story, and the foreshadowing was a little too transparent, disguised under what Sera apparently didn't know herself, but was obvious to everyone else reading it.

And this may be controversial but...(spoilers)

I didn't enjoy the way Nyktos' and Sera's love unfolded. And I'm purely talking about the 500 "I love you's" after Sera was saved. I KNOW we've all been waiting, and the build up was so delicious. But then once we had it, it just felt out of character for Ash to be so, for lack of a better word, sappy.

Anyway, I still adore the series, and can't wait for the next one!

post-read review:

this book gets that little boost into 5 star territory due to the pure addictive power of this series. i'm so heavily entranced by these two main characters, and by the overarching plot, that i literally could not put this down.

despite my exams, i somehow finished this entire - and not especially short - book in a day, and i don't regret it at all. this was a beautiful continuation of the series that reminded me why JLA got me into reading when i was young, and while we didn't get as much ash/nyktos content as in previous two books (massive sad face) or really any baby drakon content (even bigger sad face), i still loved watching sera's growth throughout this story, and watching her immense strength shine through.

plus, this series is just so damn entertaining. i literally cannot put it down. and no cliffhanger for this book (!!) plus i only have to wait until may for book 4!!

Spoilerand this is so random, but was i the only person getting weird pregnancy trope vibes?? maybe i'm just paranoid and on the eternal lookout for signs because i DREAD the pregnancy trope, but for some reason i kept getting hints haha. surely not though...

~~~
pre-read review: may i just brag about how somehow my brilliant brain decided to start this series a few days ago, and i’ve now finished book #2 the exact day before book #3 is released?? what a legendary coincidence.
in about an hour and 5 mins this book will be on my kindle…
