It was good, but I didn't really connect with the main character. It seems like that would make a big difference with this book. I didn't like him.

The first thoughts that came into my head after starting this book were, "Why are people required to read this in high school? And how could my English mentor have recommended this to me when I was 14?!" However, I tried to read this book with an open mind.
Catcher in the Rye follows a boy named Holden who has just been kicked out of school and spends the next couple of days wandering the streets of New York trying to figure out what he's going to do next. It's a very descriptive book that makes it feel like you're reading someone's journal rather than a narrative. I will say that I did enjoy that aspect of the book, but I really didn't understand the point of this novel.
I mean, why do people connect with it so much? I was horrified with all the language and innuendos that were written. Yes, I understand that it was written through a high school boy's perspective and this is how most boys Holden's age think, but it was still surprising to read in a book that has been called a classic! Needless to say, I will definitely not be recommending this book to anyone.

It's pretty weird, super random and I'm not sure it's for me. But it was an easy read.
I love the quote about mature men living humbly for a cause. I won't forget that.
And learned about the vernacular of the era, and how much smoking sucks.

A deep and emotional study of a character who, in his contrarianism, wanders alone and aimless through New York. The writing style is very readable, and the characters are simultaneously annoying and profoundly likeable.
