It is complicated. I went from devouring it on my first read, through finding it dry on my second read, to currently thinking about giving it a third read, simply because Flannery O'Connor mentioned in one of her letters that she "certainly enjoyed" the whole book in one afternoon, at the risk of ruining her eyes.

"Among other things, you'll find that you're not the first person who was ever confused and frightened and even sickened by human behavior. You're by no means alone on that score, you'll be excited and stimulated to know. Many, many men have been just as troubled morally and spiritually as you are right now. Happily, some of them kept records of their troubles. You'll learn from them — if you want to. Just as someday, if you have something to offer, someone will learn something from you. It's a beautiful reciprocal arrangement. And it isn't education. It's history. It's poetry."

I probably didn't like this book as much as I would've if it hadn't been for all the hype and the pretenciousness the book represented. It seemed like if you wanted to be worth anything and you wanted to be able to be taken seriously, reading wise, you had to have read this book. Despite all that it was an intertainingly cynical book and very well written, as is most Salinger

Weder der Schreibstil noch der Inhalt konnten mich überzeugen. Keine Ahnung, warum das das Lieblingsbuch von so vielen Leuten ist
