My fav book of all time :)))) I want to shake Holden and yell "GET BETTER YOU POOR KID" he's a screwed up kid who has a good heart and the depiction of his thoughts and actions are unbelievably real to how I remember my adolescence. There is def some older language that wouldn’t be used if it was written today but it's compassionate to its characters and the situations they are in.

I had to read this for English and it felt similar to Ballad of Snakes and Songbirds. Holden and Coriolanus have very similar psychological damage that you can only feel bad for them. You can tell Holden is so desperate for love and affection from anyone but keeps failing at his relationships.

This book was real crazy. It really was.
No but seriously, this book was enjoyable and I think really relatable for people in high school going through mental health issues. The ending was okay. I both liked how open it was and hated how much it left out. I enjoyed the writing style, it was different from what I'm used to and honestly, it was a nice break, especially because I'm just getting out of a reading block, so it was nice to change things up.

I love that Holden realizes that he truly misses the people in his life. I don’t think he could have ever run away. Holden throughout the story is trying to figure out himself as a teen through the ways of adulthood. Touching up on the fact that he hates everyone and just wants to grow up already.

This book was really fun. I don't condone all of Holden's behavior or attitudes, but boy was he an entertaining narrator. I don't know if all of his slang was common in the 50s or if J.D. Salinger made it up to serve the character. Either way, I truly felt like I was reading the musings of a troubled 16 year old kid. I laughed quite a bit at Holden's wild exaggerations, his contradictions, his ability to focus and comment on the quirky behaviors of those around him, and how he refers to everyone as "old so-and-so"; even his little sister is "Old Phoebe." With its smoking, swearing, school hating, and talk of sex, I can see why this was a controversial novel in the 50s, but I adore it. Those elements don't define the story, which in the end is about a depressed and lost teenager finding his way and purpose in life through his wanderings and conversations in New York. It was a quick read and likely one that I'll return to.

the extremely slow pacing of some parts in the book make it a slog to get through, but the catcher in the rye is overall still an intriguing story with lots of memorable and emotionally impactful highlights.
