It's the first classic I have read that I didn't have to force myself to finish. I genuinely loved it. The plot is amazing. It's a huge book but there's so much happening all the time that in no way it feels like a stretch. The translation is great too.

I absolutely loved this book. It's probably my new favourite classic, although I never could decide on an official favourite. I just find slow burning revenge stories so satisfying, even though the extent of the revenge made me a bit uneasy at times.

No one needs my opinion about a 200-year-old classic. But here I am, offering it anyways.
I think a lot of the beauty people find in this book is how all the disparate threads and trails come together. Dumas (and uncredited friend?) do an amazing job bringing everything to a cogent end. However, in order to get to that point, there is a LOT - like 500 pages - of middle to get through. There were moments, certainly, where I was deeply invested. And then we had to read like a billion pages of Villefort's philosophical grandstanding and Morrel being dumb, and I lost the will to go on. The characterization could have been stronger. Some of the characters were inconsistent or shallow. That said, I was 100% all in for all scenes Albert. Last thing: I'm not sure I learned my lesson. Is revenge a bad thing?
Was it worth it? If I'd been reading by myself, I don't know. But I read with a fun group where we had a lot of interesting arguments. I'm glad I did it, for the company I kept while reading.
Anyways, available to co-write a sequel/spin-off based on Albert, if anyone wants to partner up.

I loved this. Edmond Dantes is a total badass. He is the original "Most Interesting Man in the World." This book's got it all - drama, romance, adventure, murder, mystery, and most of all, revenge!! It's easy to see why this book is often named as a favorite. I really enjoyed the characters, both the good guys and the bad guys. Very imaginative story. The only part I didn't like was the section that takes place in Rome - that part really dragged along, although it inevitably did have a point. It just took a loooong time to get to it.
If you have trouble getting through really long books like this, try the abridged version. I switched from the unabridged to the abridged version about halfway through and it made all the difference!

4.5, massive but well worth it! So much build up for the most epic and satisfying ending to tie up every single loose end. Also, what’s with everyone in this book having face blindness??
