Intelligent, self assured, engaging tale of one man's rage against the Hobbesian machine. Would be great, were it not for Auster's tin ear for female characters, who in this novel are single minded artists that serve only to paint philosophical parables.

I enjoyed this book mainly because of its extraordinary character, Benjamin Sachs. One of those characters who are more interesting and intriguing and they mean more than the story thereby making it a compulsive read despite the writing itself which I didn't really enjoy but was just okay nonetheless.
