(actually 3.5⭐)
i found this warmer than the new york trilogy and it has a nice holmes/watson dynamic, but adultery stuff bores me... when i say warmer i mean that the characters are really really great

At first i thought that I wasn't gonna like this one, but oh boy was I wrong. It was a fast read for me, I found myself gripped to the novel looking for the answers. I really enjoyed this type of narrative. Recommend!

Not the most engaging of Auster's books that I've read, but it was OK. The protagonist tries to keep up with a disturbed friend.

i just noticed that next to 'my review' goodreads says 'what i learned from this book.' i guess what i learned from paul auster's leviathan is that unlike similar writers who mix genre with magic realism (murakami, lethem, etc), auster grounds his books equally in experimentalism and humanism. all of his books, even his strangest, have sympathy for the people in the novel. leviathan is probably the biggest mix of the two. not as emotional as auster's new stuff, and not as strange as city of glass, its a good mix of the bizarre and the heart-warming. the story is absolutely engrossing, and the complex twists and turns in the narrative are just as compelling as the philosophical ideas it ambiguously throws at the reader. aside from all of this, the ending was perfect. highly recommended.

Another classic Auster story. I am pretty fascinated by the way Auster writes and how he is able to level with each of his characters and carry the reader with him in this journey of understanding. Even if on the surface the choices that the characters make, or the way they think don't make sense on a personal level, we read about their inner world and everything starts making sense.
Leviathan is not his best work, the ending is a bit rushed in my opinion, but that also makes sense in the context of the story.
